Chapter 15

The next morning, Mousehole was abuzz with the news of Hyacinth Amesbury’s murder. Even if she was one of the less popular people in the village, most agreed that being strangled with your garden hose and then planted in your own flower bed was a terrible way to go, even for her. But there were a few folks who weren’t shy about saying she probably asked for it. What everybody could agree on, though, was how disconcerting it was to know that whoever had done this was still out there.

Inspector Carlyle called while they were having breakfast and told Teddy that the bloodhounds had picked up what was most likely Alby’s scent at his mother’s abandoned car, and were now tracking him. “Well, that can’t have been too difficult,” Tuppence sniffed, “that one’s no friend of soap and water.”

Isabel was curious about something, so she decided to ask. “You and the inspector seem to have a very nice rapport, Teddy. He’s awfully forthcoming with the details of this case. How did you two get acquainted? Or am I being nosy again?”

Teddy smiled. “Yes, you are being nosy, but we’ve discussed how well that works for you. . . . Inspector Carlyle was apparently inspired to become a detective from reading my Detective Waverly series. So when he moved to Mousehole several years ago to take a position as a detective constable, he came over to introduce himself and say thank you. Lovely gesture. Very nice man. And it never hurts to have a friend in the police department. Since he’s been promoted to chief inspector, he keeps me up to speed on Mousehole police matters, which amounts to virtually nothing, but it keeps me in the loop. And sometimes it will trigger an idea or something I can use. I have four more books to write in the next four years, so it also doesn’t hurt to have fresh ideas in the bank. I also think he’s feeling a bit overwhelmed with this and needs a sounding board. It’s his first murder. They’re always special.”

While Inspector Carlyle and the bloodhounds on loan from the Falmouth Constabulary were trying to track down Alby, Bobby Blackburn had shown up for work as scheduled. The inspector would no doubt still have plenty of questions for him, but it wasn’t going to be as cut-and-dried as he might have hoped.

Teddy didn’t have class, so he and Isabel had the whole day to spend together and do whatever they pleased. But what else could a famous mystery writer and a semi-professional small-town sleuth do on the day after the murder of somebody they knew—well, somebody Teddy knew and Isabel was acquainted with—who lived right down the road, other than ruminate and hypothesize over who might have done it and why? So that’s exactly what they did.

Teddy did go down to check on Matilde after lunch, and found her still in bed, and still a mess. That was it for him. He called the doctor and asked him to pay her a visit, whether she liked it or not.
